SURE is a collective of citizens of Madison County, Indiana, striving to dismantle white supremacy through intentional education, advocacy, and engagement with the systems in our community that perpetuate injustice.
We understand that the white community created and continuously perpetuates racist barriers that inhibit true equity and justice. SURE strives to educate about those barriers and their harm within our community. We advocate for racial justice by identifying economic, educational, and social institutions that uphold white supremacy and we press for their abolishment. True justice requires engagement with all members of our community. Our membership is multiracial and seeks accountability with, and leadership from, citizens from our Black, Latino/LatinX, Asian, and Indigenous communities. Through education, advocacy, and engagement, SURE aspires to build and grow Madison County into an equitable and just community.

We sponsored three Courageous Community Conversations with over ninety adults in the county during 2022. Conversations centered around sharing experiences surrounding race and were led by trained facilitators. In 2023, we collaborated with a group called "More and Diverse Voices," an outgrowth of a series of Community Based Action Planning sessions sponsored by the Madison County and South Madison Community Foundations, to hold conversations with over 100 county youth. On February 8, 2024, we collaborated with "More and Diverse Voices" to hold a conversation with 29 youth and 21 adults from our local public high school, Anderson High School. Those conversations engage participants on issues affecting our community, including race, mental health, safety, trusted adults, equity, and inclusion. In January, 2023, we provided tickets for 20 youth to attend "The Meeting," a one-act play about an imaginary meeting between Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcom X. In early May of 2022 and 2023, members of SURE cleaned and planted flowers around an MLK statue in Anderson. Each February, SURE offers Black History information through its Facebook page and in 2024 with Trivia events at two local elementary schools. SURE participates in local MLK, Juneteenth and Black Expo celebrations. SURE sponsors local youth from the William Harvey Dance Academy to attend a national conference. SURE is present at an annual county PRIDE event. SURE hosted "Talk Back" sessions after "The Meeting" play and after a Juneteenth film.
